The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) was formed in 1963. They are an umbrella organisation for 13 humanitarian aid agencies.
At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need. Authors needed to write country-specific guides for Culture Smart thriving series. There is a one off fee payable and the books, of about 30,000 words are written to a defined formula. This is a terrific opportunity for anyone who wants to get published and has recently lived in the country featured.
The Culture Smart guides are short books that aim to alert first-time visitors to the values and attitudes of different countries. The series has been well reviewed in The Observer, Sunday Telegraph and New York Times. It has appeared on CNN's Travel website, and on BBC World's weekly travel programme "Fast Track".

Alessandra Gnudi's husband Luigi will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in September to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). JDRF is the only charitable organisation in the world with the primary objective of finding the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications. Luigi is Reader in Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine and Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at King's College London.
